  • Do not allow the flag to touch the ground or the floor.
  • Do hoist the flag briskly and lower it ceremoniously.
  • When hanging the flag vertically over the center of the street, do always have the union east in a north/south street.
  • When hanging the flag over a sidewalk on a rope extending from a building to a pole, do have the union stars away from the building.
  • Do always have the flag of the United States of America at the center and at the highest point of the group when a number of flags of states or localities or pennants of societies are grouped and displayed from staffs.
  • The flag should always be allowed to fall free. Don't ever display the flag gathered or draped like a curtain.
  • Do display the flag at half “staff” until noon on Memorial Day and then raise it to the top of the staff. Do not refer to flying a flag at half “mast” unless it is flown on a ship.
  • Do not fly the flag upside down except as a signal of distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property
  • Do not fly the flag in inclement weather except when using an all-weather flag.
  • Do fly the flag every day from sunrise to sunset. Do NOT fly the flag at night unless it is properly illuminated.
