Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (WELCA)

2009 - 2010 Quilting Project

Grace Lutheran Church of Gulf Shores conducted a blessing of quilts, school kits and health kits on August 29, 2010.  This small congregation with help from our Winter Friends completed 97 quilts, 183 health kits, and 72 school kits during the past year.  Some of Grace’s members of the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (WELCA) who worked on the donations are shown on the first picture, left to right, Reagan Turmon, Amy Pujol, Rhiannon Turmon, Dora Janasko, Ellen Bergman, and Rosa Janssen, with Pastor Jim Korzun leading the blessing ceremony.  The second picture includes LaDonna Herring, Rosa Janssen, Ellen Bergman, Linda Morrison and Dora Janasko. These quilts and kits will be donated to needy families through Lutheran World Relief (LWR).  LWR annually consolidates these donations from churches throughout the USA and ships them to Baltimore, MD for distribution to many sites throughout the world.  During 2009 WELCA donated a total of 378,050 quilts, 231,360 school kits, 93,111 health kits, 68,890 layettes and 33,750 pounds of soap to LWR.
