Excerpts from the Historical Report on the Poarch Band of Creeks
Thanks to Lisa H. Thompson

County records show several responsible citizens filling a number of positions for the county- men who were chosen from among the prominent  members of the community around Poarch. For the period between 1860 and 1890, records show that David A. Moniac, John V. Steadham,
and William Gibson served in such positions for the county as apportioner, road overseer, auctioneer, and even sheriff. (page 3)

William Gibson, remained in the community during the first years of the War due to the number of his dependents, and became one of the responsible people in the locality. On May 5, 1862 he was appointed, along with James D. Driesbach and J.B. Smith, as a Road OverSeer for his district. On September 10 of 1863, apparently a month before he decided to enlist, he was appointed by the Commissioner's Court to oversee the building of a bridge over  Pine Long Creek, The exigencies of the War finally caught up with Gibson, however, and he left his family to fight, among the last of the Poarch Creeks to do so. (page 29)

In the 1970's, the History of the Poarch Band of Creeks, and the Indian families who lived there, was well documented by Dr. J. Anthony Parades, FSU Anthropologist. Names such as, Gibson, Manac/Moniac, Colbert, Rolin, McGhee guided the search. These Creek families were found to have been homesteaders in the Poarch area during the decades after Jackson, providing the ancestral link that helped authenticate the tribe's heritage. Parades conducted the first in-depth social and economic survey of Poarch households. Describing the lives, customs, and heritage of living people. Taping dozens of oral histories, observing, and participating in everyday community life. Pouring through census records and information from government files, which helped verify that they were the descendants of Creeks who signed treaties handed to them by federal authorities in 1814, (Lisa, 2002
