DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The Cobia is a fusiform fish with a long flat head., wide mouth, and projecting lower jaw. There are bands of sharp bone plates on the roof of the mouth and the throat. The first dorsal fin consists of seven or eight short strong spines which can be depressed into grooves. The scales are very small. The lateral line is wavy in the region above the pectoral fin. The tail of the young Cobia is very convex; that of the adult is forked.

COLORS:Varies from dark to very light brown of buff. The color becomes paler on the lower part of the sides and on the belly. There is a dark stripe, varying in intensity, running from the snout to the base of the spicuous and is margined with white, White is also present on top of the head and on the first dorsal and anal fin rays.

HABITS and RANGE:Cobia are one of very few fishes found around the world in tropic and warm temperate seas. They are a migration species, so their abundance varies with the season. On tropical waters they are most abundant during winter months, but may embark on a prolonged migratory journey in late winter, increasing their abundance in more temperate seas. Gulf Coast fishermen look forward to the arrival of the Cobia. The first fish are usually expected to arrive around March 15th but they have been reported as early as February 28th. The run usually lasts until the middle of May but stragglers may remain throughout the summer. The younger, smaller Cobia tend to signify the beginning and the end of the migratory run, Cobia exhibit a characteristic behavior known to many salt water fishermen. They are attracted to large objects including buoys, ships, sharks, turtles, and giant rays.

COMMENTS:The average size range is between 25 to 35 pounds. It is not at all uncommon, however, to catch them upwards of 75 pounds. The world record at the time of publication was 135 lbs, 9 oz. caught out of Shark Bay, Western Australia, A recent decline in Cobia stocks has forced law makers to enact strict minimum length and maximum quantity in possession limits. Cobia has to rate amoung the very best in the world of gamefishes. It offers excellent sport on the hook as well as tasty rewards on the table. Everyone needs to appreciate this fish and do what we can to make sure our grandchildren will be able to enjoy this wonderful fish called the Cobia.
