Type: Bio.
Note: Jean Marie Adrien Ortet was born in Montespan, France.
The village of Montespan was famous for the castle which is located onthe highest peak in the small village and was named for its mostfamous(or infamous) resident Madame de Montespan, Athenais, wife ofthe Marquis of Montespan. She was attached to the court of Louis XIVas lady in waiting to the queen. She was beautiful clever, and wittyand soon attracted the attention of the king. She became his mistressand for fourteen years exercised a despotic power over him. Heruled France from 1643 to 1715.
My father, Jean Marie Ortet was born February 16th. 1870. His familywere farmers and blacksmiths. His father Jean Pierre and motherJeanne Joube had five offspring, Jean Marie, Leontine, Marcellin,Adrienne and Edouard.
He sailed on the S.S.Colonia from Bordeaux and arrived in New Orleans,Louisiana on October 22, 1894. (#182). He was listed as a harrier andhad $60.
Jean Marie (as he was called by his family in France) and his brothersserved their required time in the French Army. They also served theirapprenticeships as blacksmiths.
My father through some disagreement with his father decided to come tothe United States. On October 23 1894, Jean Marie sailed from BordeauxFrance on the Steam Ship Colonia #182 to New Orleans, Louisiana. Themicrofilm record states that he was a harrier (blacksmith), and had asum of $60. and that his sponsor was his aunt. He was 24 years old.In 1898 he married Marie Paysson who had immigrated to New Orleanswhen she was 16 years old. They had three daughters Reine, Margueriteand Marie. He operated a blacksmith shop in New Orleans until theadvent of the automobile caused a decline in the services of ablacksmith.
When he arrived in New Orleans he lived with an aunt, Mrs. JeanCyprien.
My Daughter Karen Alexander Niklason, discovered our french familywhile she and her husband Gary Niklason were teachers for the U.S.Department of Defense in Kaiserslautern Germany. She asked me to sendthe information that I got from my Dad not long before he died. It issuch a shame that Dad wasn't more communicative about his Family inFrance and of course we never asked him about them. After he died Iasked his oldest daughter, Reine if she knew of any brothers andsisters and she told me that he was from a large family. It was ahappy surprise when Karen called me to report that she had foundfamily members living in the same village where he was born. Theylived in the same homes that had been handed down from father tooldest son, which is still their custom. My father would haveinherited the home that his oldest sister kept for him if he returned. However all the brothers and sisters had died before we went toFrance. The lady, Mme. who lives in the the family home now is sonice and she invited Karen to tour the house. Much to Karen'ssurprise she gave her some family pictures in antique frames. One wasof two of my father's sisters, Leontine and Adrienne. And one was ofmy father or Marcellin in French Army uniform. George and I havevisited them several times and all of them are so sweet and loving. They have given us many mementos and pictures of the family that areso precious to us.
Adrienne has a daughter, Renee, who lives with her husband Roland, aUniversity professor in Paris. A son Pierre Nogues lives in Cagnes onthe French Riviera. Suzanne the eldest daughter died since we havebecome reunited with the family. Jean Marie's eldest sister, Leontine, was a teacher and district school superviser. She never married andcared for her parents until their deaths..
Jean Marie's brother Marcellin and his wife were childless. Edouardthe younger brother had one son, Gaston and he and his wife Margueritehad two children, Andre' and Clemens. Andre has two sons , Roland andMichel and a daughter Helene'. We visited them in Montespan andRoland and his wife Chantal visited Karen and Gary when they lived inJacksonville, Florida. The younger family members speak pretty goodenglish and we spent many happy and enjoyable hours together. It wasa real heartwarming experience to meet all of the family and to walkover the village where my father grew into manhood.
