Will proved before Gov. Charles Eden Unknown 2 Aug 1718 PerquimansPrecinct,Albemarle County, North Ccarolina
John Barrow, in Berkeley Precinct...a plantation containing 300 acresEnglish measure..issued Anno Domini 1681...located at Yawpim Creequein ye Pricinct of Berkeley beginning at ye mouth of little creekcalled Barrow's Creeque...at ye head of ye northernmost branch of yecreeque. /s/Philip Ludwell, Esqr, Governor and Captain General of ourProvince and our trusty and well beloved Councilors, Tho. Harvey, Wm.Wilkinson, Francis Tomes [from: Sec. of State's Office, E. Jones St.,Raleigh, NC, Index Bk I, pg 5, File Drawer #102--deed book 1663-1728]
in 24 Apr 1694-- This land was renewed to him.
Gov. Berkeley, VA, being anxious to encourage settlers for what hecalled his "southern plantations" for that land located south of theChowan River, granted 10,000 ac to Rev. Roger Green of Nasemond Countyin 1653. This land was to be given to the first hundred persons tobegin settlement with the Rev. Green to receive 1,00ac for hisefforts. The oldest deed of record in NC, dated 3-1-1661 was to GeorgeDurant for a tract of land on a river called "Perquimans" from IndianChief Kilconanen, King of the Yoepim tribes. Other deeds may have beenin Nansemond which have been lost from fires.
We know that John Barrow was an inhabitant of this area at the sametime as George Durant as he was called upon to give a deposition "tohis own knowledge" that George Durant was occupying this land at anearly date. This deposition was given on 7-13-1693 in Perquimans Pct,where we know that John Barrow was living at least as early as 1668when he married Sarah Sutton. When John Barrow gave his deposition inPerquimans in 1693 the document states he is about 50 years of age, thus establishing his birth in 1643.
John Barrow rec an additional grant of 300 ac located on Yeopin Creekfor the importation of three headrights "Robert Testor, Simon Smythe, negro Jean".
1702--Berkeley Precinct (Perquimans)--"A List of Titheables taken byCaptain James Coles for the year 1702... John Barrow and his sonGeorge and a servant John Bennett..."
5 Jul 1714--Land Patent on Bennett's Creek (head of Conaby River).Edward Moseley, to John Barrow, Sr, of Perquimans. Assignment of apatent for 300 ac. Test, James Barrow, Thomas Cook.
John Barrow, the ancestor of the Lenoir County, North Carol inaBarrows was in the Albermarle region of the state by 1662. JohnBarrow's wife came to Carolina from Massachusetts . John was probablyborn in Virginia for there was a John Barrow who received a grant ofland at Jamestown in 1626 which he sold in 1629. John Barrow was aQuaker and married Mary Sutton, 1688, daughter of George Sutton whowas i n the same area before 1668. John and Mary were parents o f tenchildren. John died in 1718.
