Note: As a young boy James Jefferson Key's father, Reuben removed fromBarnwell District, South Carolina to Early County, Georgia. He livedon the county line of Early and Decauter Counties. Reuben Key raisedthe orphans of his older brother, WIlliam Key. The mother of theseorphans, Mary Brown died soon after the 1830 Census and about 1835Reuben and several of his nephews (childern of WIlliam Key) moved toGeorgia. His nephew Henry Key, who evidently never married appears thelast time on the 1840 Census. His nephew, Micajah Key did not staylong in Early County, Georgia, but moved down to Leon County, Floridawith his wife Charlotte Cleveland. Micajah is buried in Leon County,in the Key Cemetery there.
The genealogy of Micajah Key is written in the book "The Keys InTexas": by Delia Tyler Key, which has the Will of WIlliam Key hisfather.
The Will of William Key is signed by his brother Reuben and his wifeMary Brown Key.
The date of Reuben birth can not be established yet. He appears thelast time on the 1840 Census of Early County, Georgia, and soon afterhe died. This Census places his birth as between 1780 and 1790. I(the arthour) believe he was born just after the year 1780.
On the 1850 Census of Early County, Georgia, appears Sarah Key (sisterof James Jefferson Key) and her daughter Sarah Matilda Key, it appearsSarah never married. also living wiht her are two children, Thomas andAndrew Key who were born between 1842 and 1845. I have no doubt theseboys are the grandchildre of Reuben and Sarah Key. They may have beenthe children of one of their son's who had died.
The wife of Reuben, Sarah appears the last time on the 1870 Census ofEarly Count, Georgia, and no doubt is deceased by 1880. No cemetery inEarly or Decauter Counties. Georgia, where these people are buried.
